Arezzo
Arezzo Archaeological Tour
Let’s go on the footsteps of ancient Arretium through a guided tour of the Roman amphitheater and the National Archaeological Museum
The guided tour of Arezzo planned by Cortona Tourist Guide starts from the Church of San Domenico, which dates back to the 13th century and preserves a marvelous Crucifix painted by great artist Cimabue.
Then we will visit the nearby Gothic Cathedral dedicated to San Pietro and San Donato, which hosts really valuable works of art such as the extraordinary fresco with Mary Magdalene made by Piero della Francesca and the chapel dedicated to the miraculous Madonna del Conforto, a place of great devotion and spirituality for all the citizens.
The guided tour of Arezzo will continue towards the ancient Parish Church of Santa Maria, which has exceptional sculptures of the Romanesque Cycle of the Months and towards Piazza Grande, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, where the famous Joust of Saracino takes place twice a year: in this costumed chivalry tournament the four city quarters compete to win the coveted Golden Spear.
And finally we will have the chance to admire the 13th century Church of San Francesco and its unforgettable cycle of frescoes representing the Legend of the True Cross that was painted by Piero della Francesca, one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance (the visit is available upon request and advance booking is required).
This guided tour may be extended to a full day upon request by adding a visit to one of the city museums: the Gaio Cilnio Mecenate Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art History, the Mudas Museum of religious art and the Vasari Home Museum.
