The Old Town
From Porta Bifora to the cathedral of Cortona, a guided tour through picturesque narrow streets and traditional medieval houses
This guided tour of Cortona begins from the highest part of the town where the Church of Santa Margherita, dedicated to the patron saint, is located in a scenic area at 600 m AMSL. We will follow a downhill paved track surrounded by greenery towards the town center that will lead us to the marvelous Church of San Niccolò.
Then we will continue our tour of Cortona with the Church of San Francesco, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture dating back to the 13th century, which has a number of valuable works of art inside. We will then stop at the Church of San Marco to admire its astounding facade with a colorful mosaic representing Saint Mark made by Futurist painter Gino Severini from Cortona.
Your tour guide will lead you to Piazza Garibaldi, where one can enjoy a breathtaking view onto the Valdichiana valley and Lake Trasimeno, and finally to the old Church of San Domenico, where important paintings of Renaissance artists Luca Signorelli and Bartolomeo della Gatta are on display.
